Photo Decorating Ideas!

I am always looking for FuN and creative ideas to decorate with portraits online...so today... I thought I would share a peek at a few ways I have decorated with portraits in my home!

These ideas are very SiMpLe...and EASY on the budget.

First off...these Simple Picture Boards made from 1/4" MDF, a little black paint for the edge, Mod Podge, and your photo. The size of these are 12x12. A fun alternative to the regular 'ol frame!

Chicken Wire Photo Hanger (made from 1x4 cedar fence wood...and chicken wire.

We use this to hang random pics throughout the year...then when the holidays hit I use it to hang Christmas photo cards.

Just a few display ideas...

And... last but not least...my Cupboard Door Photo Hangers! If you are familiar with my blog...you have prob. already seen these...but had to share anyway...being my favorite! You can check out my tutorial on how I made these here! {SIMPLE}

You may have seen a sneak peek of this gorgeous recipe book this past month. We hope you have been anxiously awaiting it. :) Now, until the end of August, it's available for purchase. But wait, scratch that, it's not a purchase. The best part is...

it's a donation!

100% of your donation will go to the American Red Cross to help the many people who have been affected by recent natural disasters around the world.

After seeing the devastation in Japan, several top blogs teamed together wanting to somehow make a difference. More than 50 blogs donated one of their favorite recipes to be complied into an incredible cookbook designed by chickabug (design talent was 100% donated as well). Basically a lot of people worked really hard to make something extraordinary.

Now, it's in your hands to make a difference.

This one-of-a-kind cookbook was originally only going to be offered as an E-book for a $10 donation. But after receiving feedback from readers, we realized that many of you want a physical copy. We approached our favorite publisher, Paper Coterie, who was willing to donate 100% of the supplies, and 100% of the cost of printing for this amazing cause. Are you feeling the warm tinglies yet?! We are!!! This started out as one person having an idea. Now over 50 blogs and an amazing publisher are involved and now it's YOUR turn.

{SiMpLe} Necklace Idea!

Just in case you missed it on Design Dazzle...here is a very FuN and {Simple} Necklace idea that I made with my girls!

{Simple} DIY Initials Necklace

Supplies Needed:

Tim Holtz Fragments {I bought mine @ JoAnns}

Diamond Glaze

E6000 Adhesive

Scrapbook Embellishments with initials {I found these at Craft Warehouse and are stickers}

1 Necklace backer

1 Necklace Chain

Exact-o Knife

First spread the Diamond Glaze on your little plexi-glass fragment...

Then place on top of the scrapbook embellishment of your choice...firmly press...and let dry...

Trim edge with exact-o knife if needed...

Use E6000 to glue on your necklace backer and let dry completely...

Add a chain...and there you have it!

A FuN, SIMPLE and Very CuTE lil' necklace for any girly to make!

{FuN} Last Minute Teacher Gift Idea!

These were some FuN key chain wristlets that my sis-in-law whipped up for our teachers this year. She used two different styles of 1.5 size ribbon {that she bought @ Hobby Lobby} ...and a strip of Warm n Natural quilt batting to place in between both ribbon layers.

First she sewed both ribbons together on the outsides...then using a safety pin attached to a strip of Warm n Natural...we worked it through the sewn strips of ribbon {to give it a little more cushioning}. Then singed the frayed edges of ribbon...then folded them over 3 times...and placed in the key chain and used a clamp to clamp the metal together. { Boy I really hope that made sense :) }

Then I found a picture of a key online...and printed it out and used as a template to have my kiddos trace on some scrapbook paper. Then they cut out...and wrote their little thank-you notes on the back. We made one for each their teachers and and their bus driver.

My sis-in-law purchased her clamp key ring hardware online somewhere...but for the life of me...I can't remember the site...Uggg... but I know you can purchase some on Etsy. Does anyone else know where to find them??

Anyways...they were a BLAST to make...and would really make a FanTasTiC gift for anyone!

Photography Friday- Light!

Hello everyone! Camilla here from CioCo Photography. Remember how I'm a horrible slacker and haven't been here for weeks? I apologize to Stacie because there isn't much excuse. I have been busy, wedding season is about to explode so I've been doing lots of engagements and bridals. Love it though! Today I'm going to talk a little bit about light composition .
A few nights ago I was at a session around 5:30 pm. (Sun set that night at 6:30) The light was soft, and well rounded, which is why you'll see a lot of photographers active at that time of night, racing the sunset to get the perfect shots in. Golden hours for lighting: 7:00am-9:00am in the summer, 7:00-9:00pm in the summer, and 4:30-6:30 in the winter until day light savings. Here is what I saw a lot at my session:

Shade can be very valuable during a session. Especially OPEN shade. That is within three-four feet of the shade line. Here is a picture I took in open shade:

Shooting in open shade allows your images to be rounded, light and beautiful. It eliminates shadows on the face and gives you the portrait look you want. CLOSED shade will require your camera to read the light more, and produce a slightly grainy image. Although the diagram does show closed shade, most of the shade is open.

So what do you do when there is no shade to be found? Or you have to take pictures of your family at 1:00 in the afternoon? Here are a few tricks I've found helpful.

This wedding was shot around 12:00 noon. Not great lighting at ALL. You will notice the shadow elimination isn't perfect, but the result is good considering. I used two things on the photo:

1. Reflector. Reflectors are helpful in bouncing the light back up into your subjects face. It also isn't necessary to buy pro level reflectors to get this look. Have you noticed those silvery car windshield blocks that are silver on one side and black on the other? I think you can get them for $5 at Walmart and they will produce a similar effect. Hold the reflector in the direction of the sun and move it till you see it bouncing on your subject. Its the same idea as trying to blind someone by reflecting a shiny piece of medal into their face. :)

2. Fill flash. Your camera most likely comes with a built in flash. Turning on the flash even though their is sufficient light will make a HUGE difference in shooting full sunlight.

Here is another example of when I needed to shoot full sun, just near sunset:

Here we have two examples of the same position, one shot with the sun as the main light, the other with the sun as the BACK LIGHT.

3. Back lighting a subject will help greatly. The use of fill flash or a reflector is necessary however, otherwise your camera will read the exposure of the sun and your subject will be dark.

4. Find a dark background in full sun. None of these images show that, but if you are shooting full sun, it is helpful to put your subject in front of dark trees, per se, and then take the picture. That way the camera doesn't have to expose for the sky with sun.

**If you are using an SLR- expose properly for the face and wash out the back. In the second image expose correctly for the background and then combine the two in Photoshop. An easier way would be simply to use reflectors or fill flash*

I'm not going to lie though, even though I know the principles for shooting in the sun, I hunt for shade like nobodies business. And I schedule all my shoots in the golden time. Here's that same little girl shot RIGHT after the sun goes down. (You have about 20 minutes of great shooting time once it does)

All of these images have been photo shopped, but the base you start with needs to be workable. I have mentored other photographers who have said, 'I'll just fix it in photoshop later'. I understand the sentiment, but it's not good and won't produce good images. Photoshop is like makeup, to enhance what is already good about the image. It can't cover up everything. ;)
